Freedoms of the air

The freedoms of the air ( engl. Freedoms of the air) are created by the ICAO proposals for air rights in commercial air transport. The individual rights are granted, either mutually or in bilateral agreements exist between countries that have signed the transit or transportation agreement.

Development

The first version of this standardized rights goes back to the Chicago Convention of 1944, in which the ICAO was founded. The freedoms are governed by additional agreements and not in the Chicago Convention itself, the 1st and 2nd freedom are part of the transit agreement, while the freedoms are 3-5 additionally controlled in the transportation agreement. The so-called freedoms 6-9, however, are not defined in international treaties.

The 9 freedoms of the air

The air traffic freedoms which may grant the parties are currently differentiated in nine different situations:
