freenode

Freenode, formerly known as Open Projects Network ( OPN ), is an IRC network whose purpose and goal is to offer a free and stable communication platform for the free software community. His staff are volunteers. Parent organization of the freenode network was non -profit organization Peer -Directed Projects Center ( PDPC ), which funded the project and financed. The various IRC servers are named after science fiction and fantasy writers.

History

Freenode was founded on 29 January 1994 as a small support channel # linuxneo on IRC network EFnet by Rob Levin ( lilo ) and Pauline Middelink to establish an alternative to the channel # linux on EFnet. Because in this real Linux support channel # linux newcomers were not welcome and Linux was not really the issue, it was talked about. After several months of inactivity, then stirred in August of the same year for the first time something and the channel was renamed after Pauline's proposal in # linpeople. This chat channel now first wandered from EFnet to Undernet and then further into the DALnet. 1995 referring to an IRC server that is operating on an ISDN line: irc.linpeople.org. In 1998, the founding of the Open Projects Network ( OPN).

In August 2002, the project was integrated into the PDPC and renamed to freenode. In August 2005, the conversion of the server software (IRC daemon ) of dancer- ircd on hyperion was. This allowed, among other things, the identification of registered nicknames. On 30 January 2010, a migrating the software to ircd -seven was for reasons of stability and functionality. Miscellaneous

In June 2006, freenode has been cracked by the password by Rob Levin and probably caught about 25 NickServ passwords. Users were advised to change all their passwords.

Rob Levin died on 16 September 2006 following a traffic accident.

As an April Fool's joke, which should draw attention to the controversial ACTA agreement, was known freenode April 1, 2012, that would in future all chat content for a period of five years saved.
