Freetown Central Prison

The Central Prison Freetown ( Freetown Central Prison English, colloquially mostly Pademba Road Prison ) is the central prison in Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone. It is up to the Pademba Road in the center of the city. The prison was built for 300 prisoners and is currently home (2010 ) 1311. These are supervised by only 15 guards.

Facilities, conditions

The conditions in the prison are extremely poor. In 2007 alone, lost 16 occupants from overcrowding, poor sanitary conditions and diseases their lives. The prison corresponds in no way to the international guidelines.

About three people share a currently designed for a person cell. Beds, mattresses and sanitary facilities are not available. There is no electricity or water supply. Outbreaks are common, especially because the security personnel receive only inadequate wages and bribes at any time is open. Many buildings are so dilapidated a condition that roofs collapse. Basically, the prisoners themselves must ensure in all buildings of the prison for cleanliness. Main problem is the hygienic conditions and lack of sanitation, lack of food and medical care.
