History

The Free Press was before the turn with a circulation of 663 700 copies as the highest circulation regional daily newspaper of the GDR. She appeared since its merger with the People's Voice ( SED organ in the Karl- Marx-Stadt district, not to be confused with the Magdeburg daily newspaper of the same name ) since January 1, 1963 as the organ of the SED district leadership of the district of Karl- Marx-Stadt. It took its name from the published prior to the merger in Zwickau regional daily newspaper for the circles Zwickau / city and Zwickau / country.

The Free Press was not, like most other East German newspapers, advertised by the Treuhand privatization. She went without a tender for the equivalent of 100 million euros to the media - Union GmbH, headquartered in Ludwigshafen, which also publishes the daily newspaper The Rhine Palatinate. Also applied for the Free Press, the Rheinische Post and the Axel Springer Verlag had.

Every year at the beginning of the holiday season, the press festival will be held in Chemnitz Küchwald of the newspaper. With 160,000 visitors, the press festival 2009 was the largest fair in the Free State of Saxony.
