Freie Presse (Saxony)
The Free Press is the regional daily newspaper for the former Direktionsbezirk Chemnitz. It is equipped with a circulation of 258 557 copies also the largest subscription newspaper in Saxony.
History
The Free Press was before the turn with a circulation of 663 700 copies as the highest circulation regional daily newspaper of the GDR. She appeared since its merger with the People's Voice ( SED organ in the Karl- Marx-Stadt district, not to be confused with the Magdeburg daily newspaper of the same name ) since January 1, 1963 as the organ of the SED district leadership of the district of Karl- Marx-Stadt. It took its name from the published prior to the merger in Zwickau regional daily newspaper for the circles Zwickau / city and Zwickau / country.
The Free Press was not, like most other East German newspapers, advertised by the Treuhand privatization. She went without a tender for the equivalent of 100 million euros to the media - Union GmbH, headquartered in Ludwigshafen, which also publishes the daily newspaper The Rhine Palatinate. Also applied for the Free Press, the Rheinische Post and the Axel Springer Verlag had.
As the mirror researched, the direct sale went back to an intervention of Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who had used the then head of the THA for the CDU -affiliated publishing house based in his hometown of Ludwigshafen. Carbon made sure with the publisher Dieter Schaub " a long-time companion Kohls from the native Palatinate reaped today the largest East German newspaper". The case has similarities to the sale of the Central German newspaper by an intervention of Foreign Minister Hans -Dietrich Genscher.
Support development
The Free Press has lost heavily in recent years to support. Paid circulation has declined by 40.6 percent since 1998. The proportion of subscriptions on paid circulation is around 95 percent.

Special
Nationwide was the significance of 1960 in the Free Press published, forwarded over decades by Manfred sugar until his death chess corner. The published there as Urdrucke chess compositions of renowned authors from around the world have taken its name from reprints of the compositions in books and other magazines around the globe.
Press hard
Every year at the beginning of the holiday season, the press festival will be held in Chemnitz Küchwald of the newspaper. During the event the GDR era took place 34 times, this festival was revived in 1999. Since then, the event will again be held annually. Presented are local, national and international artists. With 160,000 visitors, the press festival 2009 was the largest fair in the Free State of Saxony.
