Freifunk

Free Radio is a non- commercial initiative in the German language area. It is dedicated to the construction and operation of self-governing local computer networks as a free wireless network. Main objectives are a high degree of censorship resistance, a promotion of local communication and a decentralized structure as possible. Freifunk builds on the Picopeering agreement, which is intended to ensure a discrimination-free network (see network neutrality ). Furthermore, the operators important that anonymity is assured and that no monitoring can take place.

Technology

As in many other free radio networks also comes with free wireless Meshtechnologie used. In a mesh network, the participating routers connect through a particular software together. If the router fails, this software automatically recalculates over which other routers to reach the destination, the data packets. In the case of free radio, this is a free radio firmware, which is usually based on OpenWrt and other free software. There are many different implementations of the firmware, depending on the employed in the local community hardware and protocols (such as OLSR and BATMAN ).

History

In April 2000, Consume and free2air tried independently in London setting up free networks. In the workshops Consume Clincs arrangements have been made and establishes rules which should govern the communication between each other and nationally.

On 12 and October 13, 2002 took place during the conference Urban Drift under the title BERLON in Berlin bootlab A workshop on Wireless Zero citizens' networks in Berlin and London. One result of the BERLON was an agreement on principles for building free networks, the Picopeering - Agreement. This describes how to handled in a free wireless network in the transit of data on foreign equipment. Even during the BERLON agreed some of those present future regular meeting in Berlin to hold to build your own free wireless network. Under the wave soldering name since regular meetings in Berlin c-base on Wednesdays. In parallel, the foundation for the German -language web portal was placed freifunk.net.

In September 2003, founded the non-profit sponsoring to support free networks eV moral and financial support to free communication infrastructures, some active.

The practical implementation of the idea in the form of an easy to install software for commercial wireless router has significantly contributed to the success of the initiative in the following years.

In 2012, free radio operator in Berlin obtained with the Freedom Fighter Box project a great deal of media attention. This project is directed against the nuisance liability, demand its abolition activists. By Störerhaftung operator of an un - or poorly secured wireless network for the actions of users of wireless networks can be held partly responsible. For the operator, costs can arise because of a warning thereby. This uncertainty leads to more and more wireless access points are closed, for example, in coffee shops or in public places. The Freedom Fighter Box gave away free of radio is a fully equipped wireless router, which forwards the data from the open -Fi via a Swedish VPN providers on the Internet. In Sweden, the interference liability exists, as elsewhere outside Germany, no.

In October 2012, the media authority of Berlin -Brandenburg decided to support the development of backbone network of the Berlin free radio community with 30,000 euros.
