FRELIMO

Frente de Libertação de Moçambique, short FRELIMO, ( German: Mozambique Liberation Front, English: Mozambique Liberation Front ) is a political party in Mozambique and was the only ruling party of the former People's Republic of Mozambique.

History

FRELIMO was founded in 1962 in Tanzania Dar es Salaam as a merger of three national liberation movements UDENAMO, MANU and UNAMI, reaching 25 June 1975 the country's independence from Portugal.

Chairman of the FRELIMO were Eduardo Mondlane (1962-1969), Samora Moisés Machel (1969-1986) Joaquim Alberto Chissano and (1986-1990). The party was classified until 1989 as authoritarian and socialist. The chairman of the party were automatically president and prime minister of the country.

On 30 July 1989, the party renounced Marxism- Leninism and announced free elections, which were carried out in the same year.

FRELIMO is still the Government of Mozambique and is a member of the Socialist International.
