The Fremont County was formed in 1847 from former parts of Pottawattamie County. It was named after John C. Fremont (1813-1890), an officer, explorer and later Governor of Arizona - territory.
A special administration was established in 1850 in the now-defunct Austin. A separate judicial and administrative building was not built. Hearings were held in the rooms of the grocer A. H. Argyle.
The administrative headquarters was moved to Dayton in 1851, which was renamed in the same year in Sidney. 1858 the first courthouse for the county was built. 1863 the building was damaged by an explosion, whose cause could not be determined. In addition to a number of other theories, there is a presumption that guerrilla units of the Confederate perpetrated this attack.
1888, the construction of a new courthouse was decided. This building was added in 1966 in the National Register of Historic Places.
