The French Creek is a river in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It rises about 8 km northeast of Custer in the Black Hills and flows eastwards through Custer State Park. After about 100 km of the French Creek flows near the Lakota village Red Shirt in the Cheyenne River.

Became famous for the French Creek 1874, when an expedition of the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment commanded by George Armstrong Custer discovered gold. The discovery of gold in the valley of French Creek triggered the gold rush in the Black Hills, and led in 1875 to the founding of the first gold rush town that now bears the name Custer.
