The Great Castle is an early medieval hilltop castle on a hilltop high above the valley of victory in Great Castle, a district of churches in the district of Old Churches ( Westerwald) in Rhineland- Palatinate. After the hilltop castle, the obvious settlement Freusburg is named.

History

For the first time the joys castle was mentioned under the name Fruodeesbraderofanc ( Bifanc on the Fruodberg ) in the year 913. Bifanc means Hofgut or manor. The first recorded entry is from the year 1048.

It is estimated that the actual castle was built around 1100. The castle was first mentioned in 1247, in connection with an inheritance for the first time by name. Around the year 1580 around, Count Henry IV of Sayn renew the castle. In 1896 she came into the possession of the Prussian forestry tax department and served for many years as a forest dwelling.

The castle is used as a youth hostel since 1928. Over time, an adaptation of the hostel to the state of time was required. On 23 October 1986, the Great Castle was reopened after a complete renovation and a generous cultivation of the former Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker. Today it is one of about 60,000 overnight stays per year to the most visited hostels in Germany.

From the Freusburg one has views of the surrounding woodland and in the Sieg valley with the Freusburger mill.
