At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000), the town had 1,989 inhabitants on a land area of 3.5 km ². The average age was 40.6 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). Friday Harbor is the most important economic center of the San Juan Islands archipelago. The city is home to the belonging to the University of Washington Friday Harbor Laboratories is a famous marine biologist's research institute. Similarly, the militant environmental group Sea Shepherd is based in Friday Harbor.
