Friedemann

Friedemann is used both as a male first name as a family name.

Origin and Meaning

As Frithuman or Fridman 's name is the latest to the 14th century occupied ( Wilfried Seibicke, German Historical Names book, Berlin 1996-2006, and Ernst Förstemann: Old German name book, Volume One, Munich, reprint of the second edition 1966, Sp 535).

His first element Old High German Fridu, peace, protection, safety. Its original meaning is probably much to be found in modern (and perhaps ethically colored ) meaning of the word peace. More likely it refers to the enclosed property, it may be a legal or a religious component (cf., Adolf Bach, German personal names, Volume 1, Heidelberg 19522, p 223).

The second part of the name probably derives from Old High German man to man male, warrior; it has here, but most likely only the function of a diminutive ( minifying diminutive ). So Friedemann ( as Fridolin ) may be a pet form of names such as Bert Fried, Friedhelm or Frederick. ( Henning Kaufmann: Old German personal names, Supplement to Ernst Förstemann: Old German name book, Volume One, Munich, reprint of the second edition 1966, p 247 )
