Friedhelm Hillebrand

Friedhelm Hillebrand (* 1940 in Sichtigvor, today Warstein ) is a German engineer, pioneer of mobile communications, telecommunications manager and author.

Life

Hillebrand studied electrical engineering and telecommunications ( telecom ) at the RWTH Aachen. He worked until mid-1992 at the German Federal Post Office, most recently as Senior Managing Director. He was responsible for the GSM standardization work since 1984. He is considered the co-inventor of SMS - a technology that had initially thought to be useless his colleagues. Since 1987 until mid- 1992, he was responsible for the D1 network, the GSM network of Deutsche Telekom responsible. This included systems engineering, network planning, IT and procurement.

From 1994 to 1996 he was the first Technical Director of the World Federation of the GSM network operators ( GSMA today ) is responsible for coordinating the strategy of the network operator in the GSM standardization and worldwide promotion. From 1996 to 2000 he was Chairman of the Technical Committee SMG ( Special Mobile Group) in the European Institute of telecommunications standards. This committee with 11 subgroups and 50 working groups was responsible for the standardization of GSM and UMTS. During his tenure, the General Packet Radio Service GPRS and the basics of UMTS were standardized. He initiated in the year 1997/8 the transformation of the GSM and UMTS standards organization of a European framework in the globalized structure " Third Generation Partnership " 3GPP.

His long-term commitment to the technical and commercial development and promotion of GSM was recognized in 2000 when GSM World Congress in Cannes with the Award of the Chairman of the GSM Association, GSMA. In 2001 he was accepted as a " gold member " into the " GSM Association Roll of Honour ".

Since 2002 he is a partner and managing director of the consulting firm Hillebrand & Partners, the patent attorneys, service providers and manufacturers advises on patent issues and support. He is also the author of several books.
