Friedrich August Grotefend
Friedrich August Grotefend ( born December 12, 1798 in Ilfeld, † February 28, 1836 in Göttingen ) was a German philologist.
Friedrich August Grotefend was a son of General Superintendent Johann Gregor Grotefend and Louise Meissner (1768-1836), a daughter of the director of the Pädagogium in Ilfeld. As a member of an important north German family of scholars of the 19th century was Grotefend also a nephew of Georg Friedrich Grotefend, the cryptanalysts of cuneiform.
Grotefend went in Clausthal to school and studied theology and philology at Göttingen. He was a teacher at Pädagogium 1821 in Ilfeld and 1831 Director of the Gymnasium in Göttingen. Here he received in 1835 as well as an associate professor at the Georg -August- University, but he died, who had already been in poor health for several years, already on 28 February 1836.
