Friedrich August Wolf

Friedrich August Wolf ( * February 15, 1759 in Hainrode at the Hainleite; † August 8, 1824 in Marseille ) was a German classical scholar and scholars of antiquity.

Life

Friedrich August Wolf was the son of a cantor, and attended high school in Nordhausen. From 1777 he studied philology at Göttingen and 1779 teacher at the Gymnasium in Ilfeld. Since 1782 he was rector of the town school in Osterode, after 1783 professor of philosophy and education in Halle and in 1784 also of eloquence. In 1787 he founded the philological seminar. 1805 Title Privy Councillor, he was awarded. After Napoleon had the University of Halle closed, Wolf was in 1807 a member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin, where he moved. In 1810 he became director of the Scientific Deputation for the Section of Public Instruction of the Ministry and professor of classical philology. In 1812 he was made an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Since 1819 he was a foreign member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres. In April 1824 he traveled to France, where he died.

Work

His principal work is his 1795 arisen, fragment broken-down factory " Prolegomena ad Homerum " in which he critically examined the works of Homer to its origins back and it was a single author in doubt drew ( Homeric question ). The archeology owes Friedrich August Wolf its new recognition as a universal discipline, within the meaning of humanism (the ultimate purpose of existence is the formation of individuality ), which he founded in close conjunction with Wilhelm von Humboldt, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. Also in Education classical philology should play a major role and support their people to a harmonious education.

  • Friedrich Gotthelf Benjamin Schmieder (1779-1838) was a German Protestant studied theology and was a philologist, author, educationist and from 1804 until his death, Rector of the Royal High School in Brieg.
