Friedrich Goltz

Friedrich Leopold Goltz ( born August 14, 1834 in Poznan, † May 5, 1902 in Strasbourg ) was a German physiologist and nephew of the writer Bogumil Goltz.

Goltz studied from 1853 to 1857 at the Königsberg Albertus- University Medicine. In the winter semester 1855/56 he became a member of the fraternity Germania. In 1858 he received his doctorate with his dissertation De sensu spatii cutis.

After graduation, he remained at the Albertina and became in 1861 first prosector, 1862 Adjunct Professor and 1865. From 1870 he was professor of physiology at Halle, 1872 in Strasbourg. In 1888 he was Rector of the University of Strasbourg.

Friedrich Goltz worked on cardiac function, touch and especially about the neurophysiology and reflex symptoms. He performed on a dog as a first hemispherectomy.

In 1901 he went into retirement, and died in May 1902 in Strasbourg.
