Friedrich Gottlieb Stebler

Friedrich Gottlieb Stebler ( born August 11, 1852 in Safnern, Switzerland, † April 7, 1935 in Lahr, Baden- Württemberg) was a Swiss Futterbauwissenschaftler and ethnographer.

Journey

Stebler, son of a farmer, attended two years, the agricultural school Rütti in Bern since 1872 and studied agriculture at the University of Halle ( Saale). In 1874, he joined the University of Leipzig, where he phil 1876 with a dissertation on leaf growth to the Dr.. received his doctorate.

Already in 1875 founded Stebler in Mattenhof in Bern a private seed control station, which was housed from 1876 in the premises of the Agriculture Department of the ETH Zurich. In 1878, this station was the first federal agricultural research institute under the name " Swiss Seed Control Station " in the possession of federal over. Stebler forwarded this station until 1917.

Research services

Steblers most important publication in the field of seed testing is the book " fake seeds and seed protection" Published in 1878. In the following years he turned more and more to the forage. Since 1881 he has carried out extensive field trials with forage plants at different locations in Switzerland in close collaboration with Carl Schroeter, among other things, on the Fürstenalp in Graubünden. The evaluation of the results of these experiments and detailed studies on the alpine meadow flora provided new insights into the ecophysiology and the cultural value of the most important forage crops.

Stebler published numerous scientific articles and several books. Under the title " The best forage ' he worked together with Carl Schroeter and Albert Volkart a four-volume Swiss meadow plants - work, which is still true today in the field of Futterbaulehre as a masterpiece. To Steblers highest circulation publication, his book " The rational forage " developed. He had yet issued in 1881 self-published the first edition, but with the publishing support by the Berliner Verlag Paul Parey are then until 1926, a total of ten editions published.

About the sometimes together with Carl Schroeter research carried out on Swiss mats and pastures are published 15 notable contributions in the " Agricultural Yearbook of Switzerland " ( 1887-1905 ). Numerous articles published Stebler in the " Swiss agricultural newspaper " that he has cared for 1882 and then again from 1889 to 1916 editorial.

Stebler had acquired in 1876 the venia legendi at the agricultural department of the ETH Zurich. Until 1901 he held lectures there on forage production and alpine agriculture. In his later years he dealt with I increasingly ethnographic studies.
