Friedrich Hartmann Graf

Friedrich Hartmann Graf ( born August 23, 1727 Rudolstadt; † August 19, 1795 in Augsburg ) was a German composer and flautist.

Life

Graf received an instruction from his father, Johann Graf and then served as a military drummer in a Dutch regiment, where he was taken prisoner of war in England. After his return, he was from 1759 to 1764 flutist and conductor in Hamburg. He toured England, Holland, Italy, Switzerland and Germany and was court musician of Count Carl zu Bentheim, Steinfurt. After that, he was from 1768 to 1772 in the first flutist led by his brother Christian Ernst Graf Royal Chapel in The Hague. Then he became music director of all Protestant churches and cantor of the school of St. Anna in Augsburg, where he in 1779 founded a civic concert society. Here he met Mozart know that is not particularly appreciated his works and labeled him as " lean composer of flute concertos ". To 1785, he was conductor of the Professional Concerts in London. The University of Oxford made ​​him a Doctor of Music.

From Count quartets and quintets for strings and wind instruments, trios and duos for violin and viola, flute concertos and a cello concerto are preserved; he also wrote sacred music.
