Friedrich Heinrich von der Hagen

Friedrich Heinrich von der Hagen ( born February 19, 1780 in Angermuende - Schmiedeberg in Uckermark, † June 11, 1856 in Berlin) was a German specialist in German.

Life

Hagen was designated especially in the older history of science as co-founder of the University of the German times. His work lost during the ' science war ' with the Brothers Grimm but in influence. It was founded in 1810 first associate professor of Old German literature in Berlin, in 1818 a full professor in Breslau. In 1821 he returned as full professor at the University of Berlin. In 1841 he was appointed a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences.

He is best known for his text editions of old German and Middle High German seals. These included the 1807 translation of the Nibelungenlied in NHG and 1810 its publication in the original language, as well as a collection of German folk songs. Hagen used scientific contacts with Ludwig Tieck, the brothers Grimm, Achim von Arnim, Clemens Brentano and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Hagen was editor of the Germania, the yearbook Berlinischen Society for German language and antiquities.
