Friedrich Johann Karl Becke
Friedrich Becke ( born December 31, 1855 in Prague, † June 18, 1931 in Vienna ) was an Austrian mineralogist and Petro graph.
Life
From 1888 to 1890 Becke was a professor at the Franz Joseph University of Czernowitz in Bukovina. Subsequently, he worked at the German Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague. In 1898 he went to the University of Vienna, which he was Rector 1918/19. From 1911 to 1929 he was Secretary General of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is the inventor of a method of determination of minerals due to their optical properties and the " Becke line ".
In 1885, Becke was elected a member of the Leopoldina. In 1930 he received the Eduard- Suess commemorative coin.
With Friedrich Martin Berwerth he founded the Austrian Mineralogical Society, whose Friedrich- Becke Medal is named in his honor.
