Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel

Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel (* May 23, 1876 in Kreuznach, † May 4, 1927 in Berlin) was a German botanist and cactus specialist. His botanical author abbreviation is " Vaupel "; earlier was also the abbreviation " Vaup. " in use.

Life and work

After high school, Vaupel went into the military career, which he gave as a lieutenant because of an accident in 1895 again. He then studied natural sciences in Munich. 1899 to 1900 he interrupted his studies for a trip to Mexico and the West Indies. In 1903 he was in Munich Dr. phil. doctorate. After him a longer trip abroad led by India, Australia and Samoa.

Vaupel was born on January 1, 1908 as a teaching assistant from February 1st assistant at the Botanical Museum Berlin. As of May 1, 1921 Vaupel was until his death curator of the Botanical Garden in Berlin; on April 1, 1926, he was awarded the title of professor and curator of the museum. His successor as curator Vaupels assistant Erich Werdermann was appointed.

From 1910 to 1927 Vaupel was chairman of the German Cactus Society.

Vaupel was the editor of the Journal of Sukkulentenkunde. He worked on the 1900-1921 published by Karl Moritz Schumann and Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke published work with Flowering cactus. About the work The plant families of Carl Prantl and Adolf Engler he added, " Cactaceae " ( Volume 21 of the 2nd edition).

Honors

The plant genus Vaupelia fire. has been named after him. The epithets of several plant species ( vaupelii, vaupeliana, vaupelianum, vaupelianus ) have been awarded in his honor.
