Friedrich Kiefer

Friedrich Kiefer ( born September 9, 1897 in Karlsruhe, † April 18, 1985 in Konstanz ) was a German biologist, zoologist and teacher and well-known specialist in the group of copepods.

Teacher

Pine laid on humanistic Schönborn -Gymnasium in Bruchsal from the High School and was after his studies, first to 1940 primary school teacher in Upper Baldingen, Biisingen, Mönchweiler, Öfingen and Karlsruhe. In 1941 he was transferred to the higher education service and was transferred to the Lessing -Gymnasium in Karlsruhe. Shortly after, he was commissioned to build the Department of Biology at the newly established teacher training institute Bad Rippoldsau and train trainees. In 1943 he was teacher and deputy director of the institution. From 1946 until his retirement in 1962 taught the pine biology at the Alexander -von- Humboldt -Gymnasium Constance. In 1959 he was appointed school professor and consultant for the secondary school biology classes at the school board Freiburg.

Kiefer wrote at the suggestion of Otto Schmeil a "Handbook for the life skills classes at elementary and secondary schools " whose upheaval and all the documents, however, a bombing raid on Leipzig in 1944 fell victim.

Researcher

Friedrich Kiefer was next to his profession as a teacher, a recognized expert on the copepods. In this animal group Robert Lauterborn had pointed him and encouraged. He found more support initially at Otto Schmeil before he became one of the authorities in the field of Copepodenforschung itself.

He has published about 250 papers on this group, while nine subfamilies, 45 genera, seven subgenera and 292 species described as new. He also reorganized from 1927 to 1928, the system of Cyclopideae and 1932 the Old World Diaptomidae.

Of particular interest was with him the fauna of the underground waters of the gap system in the gravels and sediments of streams, rivers and lakes. He has summarized in several books and contributions to manuals His research results, as in the series " The inland water" in which he has edited the free-living copepods of the zooplankton in the Western Palaearctic waters. He has made more than 1,500 drawings about 130 species of calanoid copepods and cyclopiden determined.

Kiefer has also acquired a lasting contribution to the practical water conservation. He has since 1952 contributed to it to capture the plankton stock in the lake just in connection with the Plan of Lake Constance Water Supply. He first demonstrated in this work caused by the eutrophication of Lake Constance, change of plankton stocks in the lake. The corresponding results are published in the second edition of the book written by pine " Natural History of Lake Constance ".

Kiefer has a substantial portion of its assets in the "Professor Friedrich Kiefer fund" introduced, which is managed by the Baden State Association for Natural History and Conservation in Freiburg since 1982.

His demand worldwide collection of copepods is located in the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe.
