Friedrich Kluge

Friedrich Kluge ( born June 21, 1856 in Cologne, † May 21, 1926 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German linguist and lexicographer. Life

Friedrich Kluge studied from 1874 comparative linguistics as well as classic and modern philology at the universities of Leipzig, Strasbourg and Freiburg im Breisgau. He received his doctorate in 1878 in Strasbourg and habilitated there in 1880 for the subjects German and English.

From 1884 he was first associate at the University of Jena, from 1886 full professor. In 1893 he was appointed professor at the University of Freiburg, where he became a professor of German language and literature as the successor of his teacher Hermann Paul.

As one of the first German studies he worked both in his dictionary as well as in individual publications closely with state and special languages ​​, such as the sailor language, the crooks languages ​​and language students.

In 1900 he founded the magazine for German word research, which was published until 1914.
