Friedrich Oltmanns

Johann Friedrich Oltmanns ( born July 11, 1860 in Oberndorf an der Oste, † December 13, 1945 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Oltm. ".

Life

Friedrich Oltmanns began his studies in 1880 at the University of Jena and was among other things a pupil of the botanist Eduard Strasburger there. Starting in the winter semester 1881/82 Studies at the University of Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1884 in Strasbourg by Heinrich Anton de Bary. In the following years was Friedrich Oltmanns assistant at the University of Rostock, where he habilitated in 1886. In 1893 he was appointed as associate professor of pharmaceutical botany at the Albert -Ludwigs- University in Freiburg im Breisgau. Then in 1902 he was appointed professor of botany and pharmacognosy and director of the botanical garden.

Oltmanns conducted research mainly in the field of algae. From this work came his standard work " Morphology and biology of the algae " out. In addition, Oltmanns was known for his description of the vegetation of the Black Forest in the volumes "Plant Life of the Black Forest ". Oltmanns 1930 became Professor Emeritus.

Several of his students later became well-known botanist, so among other things Hans Burgeff, Alfons Köckemann, Walter Kotte, Kurt Noack, Erich Oberdorfer, Friedrich Oehlkers, Hermann Otto Sleumer, Peter Stark, Otto Stocker and Walter Zimmermann. Hans Kniep has worked as an assistant at Oltmanns.

Oltmanns 1935 was appointed a member of the Leopoldina.
