Friedrich Otto Rudolf Sturm

Friedrich Otto Rudolf Sturm ( born January 6, 1841 in Breslau, † April 12, 1919 in Breslau) was a mathematician.

Life

Rudolph's father was a merchant. After visiting the Breslauer Mary Magdalene Gymnasium Rudolf Sturm studied from October 1859 to 1863 mathematics and physics at the University of Breslau. On the advice of his professor ( Heinrich Eduard Schroeter ) he dealt primarily with the synthetic geometry. In 1863 he received his doctorate with the thesis " De superficiebus tertii Ordinis Disquisitiones geometricae ". He continued to work on the theme of " land" and was awarded in 1864 with the Italian Luigi Cremona the Steiner prize of the Berlin Academy (named after Jakob Steiner). In 1866, he worked as a high school teacher in Bydgoszcz (Polish Bydgoszcz ) in the former Prussian province of Posen.

Services

In 1872, storm taught as professor at the University of Darmstadt ( Darmstadt University of Technology ) Descriptive geometry and Performing static. In order to provide its students with a good textbook available, he published in 1874 the work " Elements of descriptive geometry ". 1878 storm was a full professor in Münster ( Westphalia). 1887 published the results of his work: " Synthetic studies on surfaces of the third order" .1890 belonged Rudolfsturm, along with Ludwig Kiepert, the founding members of the German Mathematical Society (DMV). In 1892 he returned to the University of his native city of Wroclaw, where he became a full professor for 18 years, the successor of Henry Schroeter. Rudolfsturm wrote extensively on geometry and, unlike the above-mentioned textbook and a second entitled " maxima and minima in the elementary geometry " (1910 ), he worked mainly in the field of synthetic geometry. So he wrote a three-volume work entitled ' formations First and Second degree line geometry " (1893-1896) and a four-volume, titled" Geometric theory of the Affinities " ( 1908/1909 ). Such extensive work is unique in this discipline. 1910 storm became Professor Emeritus.
