Friedrich Schlichtegroll

Adolf Heinrich Friedrich von Schlichtegroll ( born December 8, 1765 in Walter Hausen, † December 4, 1822 in Munich) was the first biographer of Mozart, a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, philologist, archaeologist and numismatist. His grave is located on the Old Southern Cemetery in Glockenbachviertel Munich. Situated in Munich's Englschalking a street is named after him.

Origin

Adolf Heinrich Friedrich Schlichtegroll came from an old, originally lived in Greifswald official's family, which in Saxony and Thuringia was located later. His father was the Duke's office actuary, later Councilor in Gotha.

Training

At age 13, he entered the Gotha Ernestinum Gymnasium, 1783, he wrote in Jena, as desired by the father, first for the law, but soon moved, excited by the rector of his school, to theology and listened mainly philological lectures. Professional career

From 1787 he taught at the Gotha Ernestinum mainly religion, Hebrew, German and Latin. 1807 followed Schlichtegroll the reputation as Secretary-General of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich. Family

1792 married Schlichtegroll in Gotha Auguste Angelica Rousseau ( 1770-1832 ), the second daughter of the director of the ducal coin cabinet, with whom he had four sons and one daughter. They led a very social life, her house was the living in Munich and by traveling scholars openly. There, among others, Johann Andreas Schmeller, Jean Paul and Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi met.
