Friedrich Spitta

Friedrich Spitta ( born January 11, 1852 in Witt rings, Kingdom of Hannover, † June 7, 1924 in Göttingen ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of Philipp Spitta in 1879 ordained a priest, took over two years later a pastorate in Upper Kassel and was a lecturer at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. In 1887 he was appointed the Kaiser- Wilhelms- University of Strasbourg to the chair of New Testament and Practical Theology. 1901/ 02 he was its rector. In 1918 he moved to the Chair of Practical Theology at the Georg- August-Universität Göttingen.

Spitta wrote scientific papers on various topics of theology, as in the areas of practical theology, the New Testament, the liturgy and hymnology.

With its Strasbourg colleague Julius Smend of the St. Thomas Church (Strasbourg ) in 1896, he founded the monthly magazine for worship and religious art ( MGkK ), the Liturgical Movement was the most important organ of the later so-called elders.

His most famous own hymn is the sacrament hymn in thy peace, O Lord my be found by Johannes Anglicus, in the Protestant hymnal ( EC) No. 222 and No. 473 in the praise of God.
