Friedrich St. Florian

Friedrich St. Florian ( born 1932 in Graz) is an Austrian-American architect.

Biography

Friedrich St. Florian graduated at the Technical University of Graz, the study of architecture, which he completed in 1960. He received a Fulbright Scholarship and completed in the United States at Columbia University in New York to study in urban planning with a Master of Science degree. After a year of teaching at Columbia University, he was a faculty member at Rhode Iceland School of Design ( RISD ) in 1963. During his years as a professor at RISD, he was dean of the Department of Architecture and Design, Provost and responsible critics of the European Honors Program in Rome. He also taught at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London; MIT in Cambridge, McGill University in Montreal and the University of Texas at Austin.

In addition to his teaching, he was an architect practicing since 1974. He has received worldwide recognition for his design of the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, which was inaugurated in 2004. He worked as a design architect in the team of the Providence Place Mall, a retail and entertainment center which was ever conducted in the city of Providence and the largest construction project in Rhode Iceland. He was also the architect of Providence Skybridge which connects the shopping center with the Westin Hotel.

His drawings are in many private collections as well as in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, MIT, RISD Museum was added and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He is a recipient of numerous awards and accolades from national and international design competitions, including second place in the countries Georges Pompidou Center in Paris competition. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. He was made an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Iceland College in 2005.
