Friedrich von Canitz

Friedrich Rudolph Ludwig baron of Canitz (* November 27, 1654 in Berlin, † August 11 1699 in Blumberg in Berlin) was a diplomat and poet.

His parents were already shortly after the marriage ( 1653) and died before the birth of his son Brandenburg chamberlain and court and Kammergerichtsrat Ludwig von Kanitz ( Canitz ) ( 1626-1654 ), Prussian district administrator and captain to Balga, younger brother of Elias von Kanitz, and Margaret Catherine of castle Dorff (1637-1691), daughter of Lord Chamberlain kurbrandenburgischen Konrad von Burg Dorff (1595-1652) and Anna Elisabeth von Loeben (1604-1684), heir to his father's goods Blumberg, Dahl joke, oak and Heller village that have been passed down from her directly to her grandson Canitz.

Life

Canitz, from the Prussian branch of the noble family of the von Kanitz, studied from 1671 in Leiden and Leipzig jurisprudence. In the context of a civil usual grand tour he undertook in the years 1675-1677 extended trips to Italy, France, England and Holland. He was able to enrich their language and literary skills and at the same time, what to know him particularly interested, important personalities. So he met in Rome the highly respected scholar Athanasius Kircher in his time, in Florence the Grand Duke Cosimo III. de ' Medici and Charles Patin in Padua, which brought him together with other scholars living there.

Canitz should have distinguished themselves early by pleasing manners, a great safety in occurrence and an unusual mediation skill. Fontane describes him as an " amiable, fine and internally applied nature."

His short life, however, was overshadowed by personal tragedies. Canitz grew up fatherless and his mother remarried twice alienated under the care of his grandmother Burgdorff on. An important event was the death of his first wife in 1695 after five of his six children were already deceased from this marriage at an early age. Also of him remaining only son, who died still a boy, should survive him only a few weeks.

Canitz was 1677 Kammerjunker Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg ( the Great Elector ) and 1680 Legationsrat. In 1683 he was bailiff of Zossen and Trebbin, later the offices Mühlenhof and Mill Beck. As Amtshauptmann the mill yard Canitz received from the Kurfürstendamm in 1683 the mission was to conduct a comprehensive renovation of the Berlin mill dam, including the stand-up building.

Elector Friedrich III. appointed him to the Privy Council in 1697 and then to the Privy Council. In 1698 he was knighted by Emperor Leopold I in the kingdom baron. He was in the diplomatic service of Brandenburg active, represented his sovereign at numerous diplomatic missions, was repeatedly sent to the court of Vienna, where he was temporarily working as Brandenburg Messenger, and took 1699 as Minister Plenipotentiary to the opened in the Hague negotiations on the Spanish succession part. There he fell ill, however, and resigned from his post.

He died in the same year in Blumberg and was buried beside his first wife in the family vault of Roebeled to which there was a family connection through his mother's family in the Marienkirche in Berlin. A week after the funeral, held a friend of Philipp Jacob Spener Canitz in the adjacent St. Nicholas Church on this one later published as a memory sermon.

His poetic oeuvre is the transitional period between the Baroque and Enlightenment associate and is considered in relation to those in the German literature as influential. From his poems as well as from French classicism (Nicolas Boileau ) embossed satires have survived that were posthumously published in a selection since Canitz had not this intended for the wider public.

Even before the infamous because of its Gallomania in all literary productions of Prussian king Frederick the Great took the written in German poetic work of Baron Canitz grace when he writes about this: " c'est le Pope de l' Allemagne, le Poête le plus élégant, le plus le moins diffuse correct et qui ait fait de notre langue of the verse (he is German Pope, the most elegant, most correct and least diffuse Versdichter our language ). " Goethe called Canitz first among the notable poetic works in his father's library and declared him one of the authors who have impressed him " reverence for poetry."

Also famous for his poem mourning after the death of his wife Doris. For his poem The satisfaction in the low registry is a song composition from 1772 before which, although listed in the catalog of works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( KV 151 and 125 f ), but may have come from the pen of his father Leopold.

He became the patron saint of Friedrich von Canitz primary school and was founded in 1999 Cultural Association of Canitz chosen eV in Blumberg.

Family

His first wife was in February 1681 Emerentia Dorothea von Arnim ( 1656-1695 ), Doris, she was the daughter of Berenth Friedrich von Arnim and Hedwig Sophia of Kracht (the latter 's second marriage was to Hofkammerpräsidenten Raban of Canstein, to his son Philip Ludwig Freiherr von Canstein Blumberg fell after the death of Canitz. ). His second wife was born on December 29, 1696 Baroness Dorothea Maria von Schwerin ( * 1670, † June 24, 1729 ), daughter of Otto von Schwerin. After his death the widow married on November 9, 1708, Baron Karl Albrecht of Schoenaich (* May 20, 1671, † May 20 1738 ).
