Friedrich von Oppeln-Bronikowski

Frederick of Opole - Bronikowski ( born April 7, 1873 in Kassel, † October 9, 1936 in Berlin) was a German writer, translator, editor and cultural historian.

Life

Frederick of Opole - Bronikowski came from an old Prussian officer's family and also began a military training. After attending military academy, he served in a hussar regiment. When a riding accident he suffered serious permanent injuries, and his promising military career was abruptly ended.

Studying and being a writer

This was based thereupon otherwise and studied from 1896 to 1899 Philosophy, Romance and archeology in Berlin. He then worked as a freelance writer, first in Italy and then in Switzerland. In 1905 he returned to Berlin and has published numerous novels, short stories and novels. Subject and theme of his work were, firstly, the military life and on the other Prussian history. The Military Author told military stories and covered topics from the history of Prussia and thus served the interests of his time. In addition, he wrote biographical, cultural and historical essays. His grave is located on the southwest Stahnsdorf near Berlin.

Translations

Frederick of Opole - Bronikowski translated a wide range of French and Belgian literature, including Anatole France, Honoré de Balzac, Charles De Coster, Stendhal and Guy de Maupassant. He was editor of the works of Maurice Maeterlinck. From the Italian Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince, he translated. In 1914 he was called up at the beginning of the First World War to the military and initially served in the General Staff. From 1920 to 1923 he worked in the Foreign Office.

Writings against antisemitism

In his late work, Frederick sat from Opole - Bronikowski with anti-Semitism in Germany apart. He sat down in particular with the writings of anti-Semitism? An impartial examination in 1920 and Justice! To solve the Jewish Question 1932 for an unprejudiced dealings with the Jews in Germany. Both documents were confiscated by the Gestapo.
