Friedrich von Spiegel

Friedrich (of ) Mirrors ( born July 11, 1820 Kitzingen, † December 15, 1905 in Munich) was a German Orientalist, Iranist and connoisseurs of the Zend-Avesta.

Life

Mirror devoted himself in Erlangen, Leipzig and Bonn oriental language studies, conducted research 1842-47 in the libraries of Copenhagen, London and Oxford, and was Professor of Oriental Languages ​​at the University of Erlangen since 1849. After he (Bonn 1841) and had the Anecdota palica (Leipzig, 1845 ) the study of the then little- known Pali language and of the Southern Buddhism made ​​an essential service by his editions of the Kammavâkya, he focused his research on the Iranian languages ​​and the Zoroastrian religion and delivered particularly a critical edition of the most important parts of the Zend-Avesta, including the old Pahlaviübersetzung thereof and a complete Germanization, the first scientific transmission of this important religious book ( Leipz. 1852-63, 3 vols ), which he comments on the Avesta (Leipzig 1865 - 69, 2 volumes) and a grammar of the language altbaktrischen (Leipzig was followed by 1867).
