Friedrich Wilhelm Alexander von Mechow

Friedrich Wilhelm Alexander von Mechow ( born December 9, 1831 in Lauban; † around 1890) was a Prussian officer, collector and explorer.

Mechow received his education in the cadet corps, participated in the German War of 1866 and the Franco-German War of 1870 /71 where he was severely wounded in the Battle of Wörth. In 1874 he resigned as Major.

From 1873 to 1875 he participated in the first German Loango expedition under Paul Güssfeldt. He undertook the second major travel 1879-1882 in Angola, where he explored the middle reaches of the Kwango, the then so-called Kaiser- Wilhelms- case discovered and followed the river upwards to the stone Barre Kingunschi. The real aim of the Congo River, however, he did not reach. The collected animals came 1882 to Berlin, where they were in 1882 and 1884 edited by Jean Louis Cabanis in "Journal of Ornithology " and from 1900 to 1901 the entrance to the famous publications Anton Reichenows found for bird fauna of Africa.
