Friedrich Wilhelm Engelhard

Wilhelm Engelhard, Frederick William Engelhard or Engelhardt, ( born September 9, 1813 in Grünhagen at Bienenbuttel, † June 23, 1902 in Hannover ) was a German portrait painter and sculptor.

Family

Engelhard (t ) was the father and Erstausbilder the sculptor Roland Engelhard (t).

Life

Wilhelm Engelhard initially trained to become an ivory carver, before the sculptor began studying in 1837 at the Higher Commercial School in Hanover, and supported him the Hanoverian royal family in London and Paris. He became in 1839 a pupil of Bertel Thorvaldsen in Copenhagen in 1841 by Ludwig Schwanthalerstraße in Munich. In 1848, he was a portrait painter in Hamburg, 1855-58, he was living in Rome and since 1859 - appointed by King George V - back to Hanover, to contribute to the design of Marienburg ( at Nordstemmen ), where he designed the " Edda Fries ". Engelhard was a member of the Hanoverian Artist Association since 1859 and in 1869 professor at the Polytechnic School. Although he is represented with a large number of sculptures, monuments and sculptures in Hanover today, be called the ' great unknown ' of the Hanoverian sculptor could call him.

Wilhelm Engelhardt is buried in the town cemetery Engesohde in Hanover.
