Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz (Berlin U-Bahn)

Metro Station Friedrich- Wilhelm-Platz is a station of the Berlin U- Bahn line 9 in the district Friedenau of the district Tempelhof- Schöneberg. The BVG operates the station under the internal abbreviation Fw; the train station is 640 meters from the Federal Square S- and U- train station and 677 meters from the Walther- Schreiber-Platz Underground Station.

History and Structure

Metro Station Friedrich- Wilhelm-Platz was on 29 January 1971 in operation, he was part of the newly opened route Spichernstraße -Walther - Schreiber-Platz tram 9 (today: U9). The station is located beneath the square of the same name, east of the foundations of the church built in 1893 to Good Shepherd.

The train station was designed by the former Senate Building Director Rainer Gerhard Rümmler. Rümmler designed a typical Berlin U -Bahn station in the style of the 1960s with a ten -meter wide and 110 meter long central platform and a row of columns in the middle. To bypass the centrally located on the Friedrich- Wilhelm-Platz Church, the platform on a slight curve. At each end of stairs lead to the mezzanine level, and from there to the individual outputs into the side streets. The rear track walls are olive green tiled, with at eye level of a tile strip is white on which the station name is mounted in black letters. The design of the subway station so similar to the same time also designed by Rümmler and 1966 opened Metro stations, the southern line U6 to Marie village.

The ceiling, green earlier, is painted white brightness of reasons today. The previous lighting system of the station should remember the Berlin widespread gas lanterns. In the 1980s, the lighting system was, however, replaced by simpler lamps, after a lamp had fallen.

Currently, the station is expanded not wheelchair accessible. A kit with a lift system is provided in the planning of the Berlin Senate until after the year 2016. For 2013, the Berlin Transport Authority planned the basic rehabilitation of subway stations. In addition to extensive renovation and modernization works a barrier-free expansion is planned.
