Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger

Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger ( born January 10, 1849 in Siebenlehn; † August 3, 1913 in Plauen ) was a German pedagogue, Saxon school inspector, textbook writer and author of the first edition of historical atlases, which is still sold under his name.

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger was born the son of a tanner and wage mayor and attended the primary school of his native city. Once finished, he moved in 1863, the Royal Saxon teacher seminar in neighboring Nossen. From 1869 he was an assistant teacher in today's Freitaler district Deuben. During the Franco-German War he served as a soldier in the garrison of Dresden. In 1871 he was appointed as a primary school teacher in Deuben. Because of its good second exam, he was admitted to visit the University of Leipzig. In the Kingdom of Saxony for primary school teachers without school this was possible since 1865.

1872 Putzger enrolled at the university in Leipzig and put two years later, the test candidates for the higher school satisfaction ( cand paed. ). In 1875 he was appointed head teacher at the secondary school in Rochlitz. A dissertation submitted in 1877 was refused by the Faculty of Arts, University of Leipzig, however, due to small size. 1877 closed Putzger a marriage, emerged from the two sons and a daughter.

In 1878 he assumed the position of director of public school in Rochlitz. Founded in 1884 in Rochlitz Putzger an elementary school library from which emerged the modern city library. In 1885 he also took over the management of the Rochlitzer trade school. Putzger participated in several social clubs. Its presented in a second attempt Promotion 1891 historical study population was judged to be methodologically inadequate, but finally adopted in 1892 by Friedrich Ratzel. Ironically threatened Putzger just in the historical Rigorosum Karl Lamprecht to fail, what "rite " led to the overall score.

1892 moved Putzger in school supervision and was Royal Saxon district school (district council ) in Auerbach. Thus, it was responsible for the full-time supervision of all elementary schools in the Amtshauptmannschaft Auerbach. In 1894 he took over the same function in the county school inspectorates Borna. In 1900 he moved finally as district school to Plauen. In 1899 the title of a council it has been awarded, in 1912 he received the title of chief inspector.

Putzger died on August 3, 1913, shortly before his retirement at the age of 64 years.

The Historical School Atlas

Early as 1876 Putzger received the order to take part in, edited by Richard Andree and Oskar Peschel in Velhagen & Klasing Physical- Statistical Atlas of the German Empire edition. He submitted his post in 1877 unsuccessfully as a dissertation at the University of Leipzig. Yet in 1876 he was commissioned by the publisher to develop a historical atlas for school use. He first appeared in April 1877 Historical School Atlas and included 27 primary and 48 secondary cards. The Atlas was a huge commercial success, which was also based on the relatively low price of 1.50 marks. The plant underwent particularly in the intermediate and grammar schools widespread. However, the publisher tried in the same year to more knowledgeable editors because Putzger knowledge of ancient history were inadequate.

From the end of 1880, the contact between Putzger and the publisher seems broken, since the 14th edition in 1888 was named as editor Alfred Baldamus. The atlas was certainly more Putzger name. Putzger brought in 1889 Velhagen & Klasing a thin Historical Atlas for use in elementary schools out. The Treaty, which was concluded between the publisher and the author left Putzger for a fee its name to the publisher for the use in connection with the high school atlas and waived any possible involvement in this work.

Putzger merit lies in the application of the principles of reduction and the clear structuring of the historical material which he himself, however poorly mastered. Historical Atlas of the school was only possible thanks to his willingness to work and his motivation. Besides its historical atlases published Putzger also curriculum proposals and reading books.
