Friedrich Zschokke

Friedrich Zschokke ( born May 27, 1860 in Aarau, † January 10, 1936 in Basel) was a Swiss zoologist.

He was the son of the engineer Olivier Zschokke and grandson of the writer Heinrich Zschokke.

Friedrich Zschokke was a professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Basel from 1893 to 1931. He was a friend of Adolf Portmann and teachers with Fridtjof Nansen. He conducted research mainly on animal geography and the small animals in the aquatic environment. He had a strong bond with his students and conducted many research trips, especially in the mountains. He made ​​it possible in 1936 with a donation to build the Zschokke house on the Gerschnialp above Engelberg, which is still one of the Student Union of the University of Basel and is primarily used for storage and project weeks.

Friedrich Zschokke was a member of Zofingia. In 1892 he was elected to the German Leopoldina.
