Genesis

Brian Wilson produced the album for the most part and sang many songs the lead vocal one. Together with the other Beach Boys He wrote the songs. Dennis Wilson was on this album his debut as a songwriter. Little Bird and Be Still are collaborative works by Dennis Wilson and lyricist Steve Kalinich. Kalinich first worked with Dennis Wilson and later with his brother Brian in many songs, of which only a few have been published.

During the work on this album Mike Love was in India to get an introduction to the teaching of Transcendental Meditation along with Donovan and the Beatles. After his return he tried to inspire the other band members for this doctrine, with all but Dennis Wilson and Bruce Johnston, but were receptive. Meant for you, Transcendental Meditation and Anne Lee, the Healer emerged under this impression.

A subsequent tour was canceled because of the assassination of Martin Luther King, a second with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the opening act was a financial failure.

Reception

Friends sold as standard in the USA. It was not in the top 100 of the Billboard charts and did not rise higher than ranked # 126, after 10 weeks it was gone off the charts. The album is one more likely to be calmer of the Beach Boys and was largely ignored by audiences and critics. In the UK charts, it placed itself pretty well and pushed it in front at # 13.

Despite the moderate success called Brian Wilson Friends today as one of his favorite albums: " Pet Sounds is by far my very best album. Still, though, my favorite is Friends. " ( " Pet Sounds is by far my best album. Nevertheless, my favorite album is Friends. " )

Song Info

The title song was the only single from the album. It reached number # 47 on the charts and thus became the lowest ranked reviews ( apart from the placements of the B- sides) of the Beach Boys since 1962. The song is about the common past of the Beach Boys and is a waltz. In the Berklee College of Music, the song was taken as an example to show the students how songs are composed in 3/4-time.

Wake the World was the first song that Al Jardine and Brian Wilson wrote together.

Be Here in the Morning contains a verse which is sung with falsetto voice. With a bad listening, you might think this came from Brian Wilson of the normally used this voice, however, comes from the lead voice in this piece by Alan Jardine, whose singing was accelerated. The line " No calls from Korthof, parks or Grillo " ( also temporarily Wilson's personal assistant ) refers to Brian's cousin Steve Korthof, the tour manager Jon Parks and Nick Grillo, lawyer and manager of the Beach Boys.

Little Bird is the first song that Dennis Wilson has written and published .. The lyrics were written by his friend and lyricist Stephen Kalinich. It is a bird of the Dennis from a window looked. According Kalinich is the bridge of the song written by Brian Wilson.

Busy Doin ' Nothin ' is a Bossa Nova. The song is autobiographical and describes a day in the life of Brian Wilson. The song contains a rather vague description of the way to Brian Wilson's estate in Bel Air, also missing the starting point.

Diamond Head came from a session of Brian Wilson with his studio musicians who are also mentioned in the credits. During the admissions to Brian Wilson presents Smile it was rumored that this piece was a Smile snippets.

Transcendental meditation is, as the name suggests, from the transcendental meditation. Some Beach Boys, especially Mike Love and Al Jardine, had long been supporters of this form of meditation. They attacked on later albums this theme again and again (about all this is that, He came down, TM, song, etc. ).
