Fritz Leonhardt

Fritz Leonhardt ( born July 11, 1909 in Stuttgart, † December 30, 1999 ibid ) was one of Germany's most influential civil engineers of the 20th century.

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1927 at the Dillmann - secondary school (now Dillmann -Gymnasium ), he studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart and at Purdue University in West Lafayette (Indiana) in the USA.

From 1934 to 1938 he was at the Bridge engineer Reichsautobahn Society. Even there, he worked with Paul Bonatz.

In 1939 he founded an engineering office, which still exists today under the name of Leonhardt, Andrae & Partner.

He was known by the construction of numerous bridges, high-rise buildings and TV towers in reinforced and prestressed concrete construction. Built by him Stuttgart TV tower was the world's first TV tower in reinforced concrete. Together with Wolfhardt Andrae founded Leonhardt 1953, the engineering firm Leonhardt, Andra and Partners ( LAP). From 1957 to 1974, Leonhardt Professor of Concrete Structures at Technical University of Stuttgart, 1967-1969 also rector. At the planning required for the microwave network type towers he was instrumental. In 1975 he received the Gold Medal of the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Fritz Leonhardt was awarded numerous honors, including the Grand Cross of Merit and six honorary doctorates. In 1981 he was honored with the Award of Merit in Structural Engineering International Association of Building and Bridge IABSE. 1982 Leonhardt became an honorary member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. 1998 a hitherto unnamed junior high school in the Stuttgart district Degerloch was named after him. His grave is located in the forest cemetery Stuttgart.
