Fritz Spiegl
Fritz Spiegl (born 27 January 1926 in Zurndorf, Burgenland, † March 23 2003 in Liverpool ) was a British composer, writer and journalist of Austrian descent.
Born in Zurndorf as the son of a Jewish mother, he escaped in 1939 as his sister by a Kindertransport to England. Spiegl studied at the Royal Academy of Music and was a flautist in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
For the BBC, he wrote the Radio 4 UK Theme, a medley of famous folk songs from all parts of the United Kingdom. The piece served as the signature tune of the BBC radio channel Radio 4 and rang from 1978 to 2006 every night to the transmission circuit. When it was withdrawn from the program, employ protests applied listener even the House of Commons.
