Fritz Zweigelt

Friedrich " Fritz" Zweigelt (born 13 January 1888 in Hitzendorf; † September 18, 1964 in Graz) was an Austrian botanist, entomologist, vine growers and National Socialist.

Life

Zweigelt bred in 1922 at the School of Viticulture Klosterneuburg, inter alia, by him as Rotburger named and later named after him as well as the grape vine Goldburger.

Even before the Anschluss in 1938 was Zweigelt illegal National Socialist. In 1938 he became head of the School of Viticulture Klosterneuburg, his predecessor was forced to retire, and had a student named Joseph Bauer, a member of the resistance group led by Klosterneuburger Chorherrn Roman Scholz, the Gestapo deliver.

Zweigelt turned against direct- grape varieties, whereby for example Uhudler got its bad reputation.

After the war, Zweigelt were removed from the post of director and his 1943 awarded lecturer at the University of Agricultural Sciences. In 1963 he published an autobiography in which he revealed little insight regarding his past. In 1975 was renamed the previously designated by Zweigelt as " Rotburger " grape variety " Zweigelt " in the course of quality vines regulation.
