History

The local presence of humans for about 10,000 years is occupied. Probably the Romans talked here a fortified place. After the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors in the early 8th century AD, the city was probably abandoned.

During the Reconquista founded Fernão Rodrigues Monteiro († 1237 ), a Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of Avis, the place for King D.Dinis new and populated it.

In the Portuguese Revolution of 1383 fronteira was the scene of hostilities. A particular example is the battle Batalha dos Atoleiros of 6 April 1384 in the Portuguese forces defeated the numerically superior army of the Kingdom of Castile under Nuno Álvares Pereira. King D.João I granted fronteira then a series privileges, but only King D.Manuel I gave the place full city rights ( Foral ), in the year 1512.

When the circuit fronteira had existed several centuries from two municipalities, namely Nossa Senhora da Atalaia de fronteira and São Saturnino, he learned many changes in the course of various administrative reforms of the Liberal Revolution of 1822. Economy

Agriculture and processing of agricultural products are the most important economic factors in a circle. Mention may be made of olive oil and cork, but especially the cultivation of cereals and some vegetables. Also livestock here has some meaning.

Tourism has gained some weight in a circle and is usually operated as rural tourism, as in the listed Herdade dos Aroeirais and other mostly baroque mansions. However, the greatest importance for tourism are the thermal baths in the community Cabeço de Vide.

Arts and crafts, especially embroidery, are another source of income in the village.

Traffic

The place was a stop on the railway line Ramal de Portalegre. Since its closure in 1990 fronteira no longer has any connection to the Portuguese railway network.

The national road N245 connects fronteira with about 30 km to the south Estremoz and connecting it to the A6 motorway.

Fronteira is integrated into the national bus network of speech Expressos.
