Frontier Developments

Frontier Developments is a British game development company, which was founded in 1994. The company is headquartered in Cambridge, England, with a subsidiary in Halifax, Canada. It employs over 200 people worldwide.

Company History

Frontier Developments was founded in January 1994 by David Braben, developed by him after the game Frontier: Elite II was released in 1993 with great success. Since then, he leads the company, currently in the position of Chairman.

In 1995, the first game of the company was published in the form of a further continuation of the Elite series under the name First Encounters. However, the game company GameTek published an unfinished version, which included a lot of bugs, so First Encounter only got bad reviews. Frontier Developments sued Gametek for damages, the procedure was terminated in 1999. Frontier Developments worked on a further continuation under the title Elite 4, but since this title was in the works since 1998, he has been repeatedly referred to as vaporware and will for some time no longer in the list of developed and under development games of Frontier Developments listed. Instead, a multi-player network capability elite successor is planned with contemporary artwork now for 2014, which aims to build on the gameplay of the original Elite. The project has been funded via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.com.

Apart from its Elite series Frontier Developments, among other Dog's Life and parts of the Roller Coaster Tycoon series. It also has the sole license for the computer games of Wallace & Gromit.
