FrostWire is a peer- to-peer ( P2P) file sharing client. It used to and including version 4.21.8 the Gnutella and BitTorrent network and was created in September 2005 through a spin-off from the LimeWire client. It is cross-platform written in Java and is available as free software under the GNU General Public License ( GPL). Since version 4.10.5 FrostWire also works on Intel -based Macs. With the start of the release branch No. 5, the support of the Gnutella network has been completed. The program has since supported exclusively the BitTorrent network.

History

How many manufacturers of P2P software also came Lime Wire LLC, the trademark owner of LimeWire, in legal battles with the RIAA and was forced to sign a cease and desist letter. In the future, LimeWire will contain protective mechanisms to prevent the exchange of copyrighted files. On 26 October 2010 Limewire LLC further distribution and support of the software has been prohibited by a court ruling.

Open - source developers, including many from the inner circle of the LimeWire team, disagreed with this development. They founded the FrostWire team, which further developed the FrostWire software after the original LimeWire roadmap. Thus FrostWire was the free successor of LimeWire. After admission, the developer of the software there would be no commercial version, it should contain no filters or barriers.
