Frottage (art)

The frottage (French frotter " rub " ) or attrition is originally an ancient printing technique that was discovered and developed their artistic potential by Max Ernst from 1925 for the fine arts again. In frottage the surface structure of an object or material by means of rubbing chalk or pencil is transferred to a aufgelegtes paper.

Unlike a " set-off ", a broaching process for reproducing engraved inscriptions, the technology is not used in the faithful reproduction of a model, but is itself an artistic style means. Areas of color about the structure of materials, wood grain, rough stone slabs, sheets or other. Frottagetechniken are usually used in combination with other forms of artistic expression such as collage or supplement traditional techniques such as oil or watercolor painting.

A continuation of this technique by other means can be found in the Nitrofrottage.
