Frozen River

Frozen River is an American film drama from the year 2008. Directed by Courtney Hunt, who also wrote the screenplay based on its own short story.

Action

The action takes place in rural areas in New York State. A frozen river in winter ( "Frozen River" ) forms the border with Canada, the region is subject to both sides of the river the autonomous administration of an Indian reserve, what the capabilities of the regular police greatly limits. Individual Indians take advantage of this special position by smuggling fee at night illegal immigrants from Asia in the trunk over the frozen river in the United States. The single mom Ray Eddy learns by chance know the Indian lilac. The inside of the reserve, a little isolated living Purple Ray leads into the smuggling business. Ray tries in this way to solve their serious financial problems that her gambling-addicted husband has left her and her two children.

Reviews

Robert Koehler wrote on January 20, 2008 in the online edition of the magazine Variety, the " grandiose and evocative " portrayal of Melissa Leo dominates the film that neither trends nor set was groundbreaking. Leo mobilize their reserves to cope with " hard-heartedness " and " honesty ", a " large, complex role ." You do not try to please the audience, which they then abverlange attention respect.

Prism praises the film as: [ ... ] a U.S. theatrical work that does not shine with special and blast - shooting effects and star cast, but tells sensitively the hard life of the people on the breadline.

Awards

Courtney Hunt was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008. That same year, actress Melissa Leo went on to win the award for Best Actress at the Spanish Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia- San Sebastián, she with the Frenchwoman Tsilla Chelton ( Pandoranin kutusu ) shared. 2009 received a screenwriter Courtney Hunt and actress Melissa Leo Oscar nominations.

Background

The film was shot in Plattsburgh (New York). Its production costs amounted to an estimated 1 million U.S. Dollar.Eingespielt has the film in the global evaluation of the 5.4 million U.S. dollars. The premiere took place at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2008.
