Fructuosus of Braga

Fructuosus († 665 ) was abbot, bishop of Braga and Dumio and later Archbishop of Galicia ( Gallaecia ). He is venerated as a saint. His feast day is 16 April.

Life

Fructuosus came from the Visigothic royal family in Spain. In Palencia, he attended the school, which the bishop had founded Conantius the formation of the clergy. The proceeds from the sale of his goods he used for monastic foundations and poor relief. He lived as a hermit, but took over at the request of the monks of the Priory of her he founded the monastery Comultum at Astorga. He promoted the monastic system, and so drew many Gläubigean that several monastic foundations, including a " Family Monastery ", followed.

Fructuosus took 656 as Bishop of Dumio on 10th Council of Toledo in part. To 656 combined Fructuosus Dumio whose administration had been transferred to him at the Synod of Toledo again with the diocese of Braga. When he died in 665 was Leudigisus, the board among other things the third Council of Braga (675 ), his successor as bishop of Braga.

In 1102 his relics were transferred to Santiago de Compostela, and to have worked many miracles there.

Monastic rules

Some authors also perform the famous Regula communis, which was written to 660, back to Fructuosus.

He had designed a rule ( Regula Fructuosi ) with 20 chapters already 645, but which is much more stringent. It is aimed primarily at so-called monastic communities, which consist of a family and their servants and submit to no further authority. Especially the forced monastery entrance of servants and slaves is criticized by Fructuosus, if not prevented.

After regulators Fructuosi spouses could either together to enter a convent, but had to each other and their minor children away, which were prepared for an entry into the convent. Even in the case of illness, a monk should not be cared for by his wife, sister or a female slave. A return to secular life should no longer be possible in particular recourse to worldly goods. This should instead be distributed to the poor before the monastery entrance. However, it seems that they usually went to the monastery and formed a substantial part of its revenue. The local law seems to use this idea individual property, particularly land and grazing rights, however, to have contradicted.
