Frutillar on the map of Chile

Frutillar is a city in the south of the South American Andean country Chile in the Región de los Lagos (Region X).

Frutillar is located on the western shore of Lake Llanquihue, with around 860 km ², the second largest lake in Chile. Looking from Frutillar on the opposite side of the lake, you can see there the mighty Volcán Osorno with its 2652 meters height.

The town consists of an upper town ( Frutillar Alto ) and a lower town ( Frutillar Bajo ). The Pan-American Highway runs near Frutillar Alto. Frutillar Bajo is located directly on the lakeshore. Frutillar is a very German influenced city.

Frutillar has about 15,000 inhabitants (2003 ).

History

1552 reached Pedro de Valdivia Llanquihue Lake. From 1846 onwards German immigrants settle in the area around Lake Llanquihue. They found the capital of today's Region X, Puerto Montt, in 1853. Frutillar is also founded by German immigrants on 23 November 1856.

1907, the city of Frutillar Alto gets a rail connection to the line Santiago - Puerto Montt.

Tourism

The city offers wonderful trips around Lake Llanquihue and the Osorno Volcano. North of town is a 33 -acre forest (Centro Forestal ) with many pine species, ideal for hiking. Also known is the southernmost palm of the world, Chile palm ( Jubaea chilensis ).

A museum (Museo Colonial Alemán ) shows the German colonization middle of the 19th century. Every year (late January and early February ) find the Frutillar Music Festival held ( Semanas Musicales de Frutillar ).

Economy

Tourism is the mainstay of Frutillar. A yacht club keeps a sailing trips on Lake Llanquihue. In addition, the Teatro del Lago offers a wide range of cultural -educational offers.

Within agriculture with corn and wheat and forestry play a role. Frutillar is conveniently located off the Panamericana, and you can easily reach the business centers of Osorno and Puerto Montt.
