Frøya is an island located in the North Sea off the coast of central Norway. With some surrounding islands, it represents in the Fylke Sør-Trøndelag the commune (municipality ) westernmost

Administrative seat is the village Sistranda on the east coast of the island. Other settlements are Bogøyvær, Sula, and Mausund on the north coast and Titran on the west coast.

Geography and fauna

The island Frøya 147 km ², but the area of the municipality is 244 km ². Apart from the main island still count about 5,400 smaller islands and cliffs to the community. Frøya itself is relatively flat the moh with a highest point at 74. lies.

Most of the community is part of the nature reserve established in 1979 Froan, that's a total of 400 km ². In the reserve breed around 50 different species of birds. In addition, there are countless birds that visit the area for a short time. Froan also represents the core area for the Norwegian stock of gray seal

In the 163 waters of the main island mainly live trout. Also a part of the red deer herd from the neighboring island Hitra has moved here. The population is independently viable and will also hunted. Nevertheless, it is much more modest than the flock of the neighboring community.
