FS Class ALe 724

The ALe 724 are a series of electric multiple units of the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato (FS ), which were designed in the late 1970s for the transport.

History

The ALe 724 were based on the prototype of the ALe series 644/804 (so-called GAI trains) developed and delivered 1982-1984. Compared with the older trainsets ALe 803 and ALe 801/940 have the 724 ALe a lower mass service and thanks to the electronic equipment better acceleration.

Train compositions

Together with the 90 railcars were 120 intermediate cars (Le 884 ) and 30 control car (Le 724) built, which allows flexible train compositions.

There are two typical train compositions were formed:

  • Tw w w Tw (30 trains)
  • Tw w w Sw ( 30 trains)

The compositions with two railcars were due to better acceleration in Turin ( for suburban services ) and in Naples (for the so-called " Metropolitana " ) home. The compositions with only one engine cars were home for the express trains on the Valtelina in Milan.

Paintwork

Originally ALe 724 in " Wendezuglackierung " ( " Livrea navetta " ) were, in beige with orange and purple stripes, painted. In the late 1990s she received usual for the FS XMPR finish.

Variants

Simultaneously with the ALe 724, the railcar E.750 were developed for the Ferrovie Nord Milano.
