FTAM

File Transfer, Access and Management ( FTAM ) is a standardized data communication protocol for file transfer, standardized by OSI and adopted by ISO and DIN. FTAM defines a significantly greater functionality than offer rudimentary file transfer protocols such as FTP. FTAM specifies a virtual file system with a tree-like access structure, wherein the data units can be ordered trees to the node again. In this way, very complex file structures are possible. The standard provides for the description of these structures and a diverse selection of attributes and operations. FTAM is offered as a software product in specific functional profiles of many manufacturers and is suitable especially in heterogeneous computing environments for software for file operations.

As with all network protocols that are based on the OSI standards, the use of FTAM is not very common in the PC sector and essentially limited to the commercial sector. Mostly authorities and other public contracting Law ( ed) FTAM one because of its vendor independence. A major role of the FTAM process even today in the payment of German banks ( via ISDN) and in the communication of employers and healthcare providers.

Development

In payment of the FTAM standard was still being supported by 31 December 2010. The Central Credit Committee (CCC; Today The German banking industry ) combined associations of the banking industry have to change the technical facilities of the Dial-Up Agreement decided to allow an Internet-based communication between customers and banks. The new transmission method is called EBICS (Electronic Banking Internet Communication Standard ) and is used since 1 January 2008.
