Fuat Sezgin

Fuat Sezgin ( born October 24, 1924 in Bitlis ) is a Turkish orientalist. The author and editor of numerous scientific works, Professor Emeritus of History of Science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main as well as the founder and first director of the Institute for the History of Arabic-Islamic Science, pioneered the study of Islamic science culture in Arabic language. With its history of Arabic literature, he has created an international reputation genießendes standard work.

Life and work

Sezgin studied from 1943 to 1951 at the University of Istanbul Islamic Studies and Arabic, among others, at the teaching there German Islam scholar Hellmut Ritter (1892 - 1971). He also dealt with the history of the Arab -Islamic literature since the 14th century. 1967, the first volume appeared in his history of the Arab writing about the historical and religious literature. The aim of the Institute is to make known the position of the Arab- Islamic culture in the history of science. In 2001 he received the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2009, he should be honored for his contribution to the dialogue of religions, together with Salomon Korn with the Hessian Culture Award. Sezgin rejected the assumption that grain " Israel's war in Gaza justified " and he therefore did not wish to be recognized together with grain.

Fuat Sezgin is the orientalist Sezginverheiratet Ursula, with whom he lives near Frankfurt. Their daughter Hilal Sezgin is a writer and journalist and is involved in founded in 2010, Liberal Islamic Federation.
